Prototype 2

Before the Christmas break (starting 14th December) I was able to produce this new prototype, which I used to test the new design and experiment with orientation and how that might effect the strength of the arm.

I arranged the arm at an angle to the print bed, ensuring that the layers that compose the branches within the structure would be as large as possible, not only allowing load bearing ability of the model to rely more on the tensile strength of individual layers, but also the larger surface area and therefore adhesion between layers.

whilst the new design was far stronger than the previous prototype, as you can see in the image above, the reliance of printing on support material resulted in warping of flat surfaces, possibly due to insufficient adhesion.

Since the final sintered metal prints will be strong enough to negate the threat of splitting between layers, I will be printing future prototypes flat to the print bed.
